Frank Talk about Prescription Medications
For those who read this column, it is clear that I have reservations about the use of prescription arthritis medications for pets.

Hurricane Katrina
It is ironic that in the last issue I mentioned that "storm season" is with us again. Of course, no one could have known that the Southern United States would be devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Storm Season and your Pet
Having lived through a massive hurricane last year that took a large part of my house, I am a little sensitive to this issue. Since we are in hurricane season and it doesn't end until November

More New "Miracle Products"

By J.R. Rogers

Recently, one of our regular readers told me about a new "miracle" pet product for arthritis. (I am not going to name it.) Of course, she had seen this on a "message board" on the internet. In fact, it may have been on those that we maintain. I did not bother to even look.

So what is this new product?
I took it upon myself to check this product on the internet. And, it is touted as being a wonderful way to deal with pet arthritis. In fact, I am told that the person that posted this on an internet message board suggested that they were "switching from Syn-flex® to this other product."

What did I find?
Frankly, I could find no ingredient list for this product. So, what is in it? Even sold as an "all-natural" remedy, one would think that the manufacturers would list the ingredients. Secondly, and more importantly, it is apparently used only for "anti-inflammatory" purposes. In other words, it works (apparently) to fight arthritis pain and that is all it is used for.

What are you looking for?
There is no doubt that high-quality liquid Glucosamine products do two things. First, if the formula is done correctly it will handle "inflammation" very well. Secondly, Glucosamine assists in "rehabilitating damaged cartilage."

If you are seeking safe all-natural arthritis relief for you arthritic pet, the choice is simple. You want to ease their pain and give them some rehabilitation for their damaged cartilage. What good is pain relief if there is no rehabilitation?

A Note about Internet Message Boards
I have had some experience in researching how "message boards" become advertising forums. Individuals who may have a financial interest in promoting a certain product simply start placing messages on bulletin boards to encourage the sale of a certain product.

What is interesting is that there is no way to "trace" the source of these messages. And, those who "misuse" message boards to do this know it. That is why they use them.

It is very easy to engage in this kind of misuse of message boards and I just think you should be made aware of it. Do not buy into some "message" that is nothing more than a "sales pitch." It is wrong to do this in every sense of the word.

My choice?
Stay with "tried and true" high-quality liquid Glucosamine formulas that do the job. And, I mean providing both anti-inflammatory and rehabilitation qualities. After all, the long history of clinical trials with Glucosamine tells that story better than I can.

See you next time.

Hi all,
I need help!
My 11 year old Portuguese Water Dog has what looks to be arthritis. Her vet put her on Rimadyl and ProMotion, which contains glucosamine. She has not improved. Matter of fact, she got worse and was falling down the stairs. The vet was alarmed and suggested a complete workup with a neurologist, thinking she might have a disc problem.
After spending quite a bit of $$, the neuro found NOTHING wrong. All tests were negative and he even said she wasn't arthritic. (then why is she stumbling and stiff??). He suggested going back to the vet for blood work.
I called the vet who felt there was nothing more he could do to help my dog!
So I am turning to you experts here. Maybe a different supplement is needed. I'm reading about some good products here, but they are in liquid form. Annie is the fussiest of dogs AND has a sensitive stomach. But she tolerates the chewable ProMotion well.
What do you suggest I try next?
Thanks,
Terry

Do you know if it would be safe to give my dog, Pepper, Tylenol, Advil, Asprin, Alieve, ect.?
She can hardly move and I can't even get her up to go to the bathroom!
I just need to temporarily relieve her pain until I can get her to the Vet. The soonest they could get her in is in about a week. She is an outside dog and I let her sleep inside, since it gets pretty cold at night.
