Stunning News for Users of Aleve
Last review: 08/12/10  J.R. Rogers
From the newswires across America another stunning announcement coming on the heels of studies implicating prescription pain medications as bearing cardiac risks. Vioxx was removed from the market and of course, concerns have arisen regarding the use of Celebrex and Bextra. Now, a clinical study has demonstrated that Aleve is also putting consumers at risk of cardiac complications. That’s not all.

The study of Aleve (Naproxen when used in prescription form) was conducted by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and the findings were alarming to say the least. About 2,500 patients were using Aleve in a clinical trial lasting nearly three years. The findings confirmed that approximately 50% had a greater risk of heart attack or stroke.

The numbers being reported for cardiac complications are alarming to say the least. Vioxx was removed from the market in the past month. In another study, reports state that high doses of Celebrex raised the risk of a cardiac complication by as much as 240%. The demise of Vioxx and the withdrawal from the marketplace was followed by reports that it raised the risk of heart attack or stroke by as much as 100%. And, Bextra has also been implicated.

What is really alarming, is that this latest finding also leaves federal officials concerned that all NSAID’s (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) carry the same risk. This is an issue I have talked about frequently.

These reports should alarm consumers and it seems clear that the studies of NSAID’s had apparently focused on potential pain reduction benefits as opposed to risk factors. Certainly, that would seem to be the case.

I urge each of you to consult with your physicians if you have concerns about any NSAID you may be using. For those suffering from arthritis pain, we all know by now that there are safer and equally effective alternatives available.

For many years, I have cautioned about the use of NSAID’s and Cox-II inhibitors. The government is now beginning to recognize the inherent risks in these products. There is no reason to live with arthritis pain and you do not have to rely on these products. Syn-flex is the industry leader in pharmaceutical quality liquid glucosamine products and its lengthy history of success tells the story very well. Why not remove the risks and get the relief?
